In Loving Memory of
Carol Renee Mendoza
Carol Renee Mendoza was born on December 4, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York, to Catherine and John Johnson. The youngest of her siblings, Carol was a loving, joyful, and compassionate woman whose presence touched the lives of many.
Those who knew Carol might describe her as a “quiet storm.” She was calm, patient, and soft-spoken, yet had a fiery spirit and quiet strength that made her unforgettable. She loved to laugh and had a natural sense of humor, often making others laugh without even trying.
Carol graduated from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School before obtaining her first bachelor's degree at Syracuse University. After working at Off Track Bedding for several years, she made the courageous decision to return to school and pursue her true calling in healthcare. She earned her nursing degree, followed by a degree in midwifery, and ultimately achieved her Doctor of Nursing Practice. Throughout her career, Carol was known for her professionalism, compassion, and dedication to those in her care. The impact she made extended far beyond her work, as former patients and their children continued to remember her warmth and loving approach.
Above all, Carol cherished her family. On August 12, 1996, she married her loving husband, Donald Mendoza. Though different in many ways, they complemented one another and built a life together around their love for each other, music, throwback television shows and good food. Some of their favorite moments were spent enjoying a meal together, especially breakfast at the diner.
Carol was a loving, devoted, and protective mother to her two children, Caymon and Daina, whom she loved dearly. Family was always a priority, and she made sure they gathered around the dinner table, creating meaningful moments of connection and togetherness. She was a nurturing and dependable presence in their lives, always someone they could count on. Even as her children grew older, Carol continued to check in, calling Daina every day to make sure she was okay. Her love was constant, her care unwavering, and her family always knew they could turn to her.
Carol’s love for the Lord was central to her life. A devout Christian, she believed deeply in the power of prayer and instilled that faith in her children. She was actively involved in her church, serving as a children’s choir director and sharing her musical gifts by playing the organ and piano. Her faith was reflected in the way she lived—with kindness, generosity, and a heart for serving others.
Carol was brilliant, empathetic, and generous with her time and love. She had a way of making others feel cared for and understood. Giving of herself came naturally, and saying no was often difficult when someone needed her. Her kindness was one of the qualities people remembered most, and she leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, faith, and unconditional love.
Carol leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Donald Mendoza; her children, Caymon Cruz and Daina Johnson; her beloved granddaughter, Riley; her sister, Denise Dowman; her brother, Darryl Johnson; her sister-in-law and best friend, Christina Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Carol’s laughter, love, wisdom, and generous spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she gave and the lives she touched will continue to be her lasting legacy.
