As I read a tribute to Lemuel from a family member, I reflected back to my memories of Len as we roamed the basketball court at John W. Logon HS. I remember Len as a quiet point guard with a smooth handle and a good jump shot. He was always serious and was very good. Sometimes we would try to get Len to take part in our hijinks he would just smile and stay out of the trouble we getting in. Nothing serious just some good old fun.Rest in Peace Teammate

To Our Family,
Our hearts break today as we watch zoom from our homes in North Carolina, unable to attend the “Homegoing Celebration” of our brother whom we lovingly call Hazes. Although we realize that to be absent from us means that he is present with our Lord, we are saddened that this day comes all too soon. We are consoled, none the less, by memories of happy times, sad times and even crazy times that we shared as children and as adults.
We grew up in a very rural farming community called “Shotwell” in North Carolina. By todays standards, we were poor. But no one noticed or even cared. We were loved, protected and even disciplined by a village of our parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles, church folks and even neighbors. As a result, we grew up grounded in who we were, our faith in God and the belief in all the possibilities that this world holds.
Hazes was never a fan of farm life. The work was hard. The pay was lousy and nothing exciting ever happened. Education became his way out and he needed little prompting to keep on track. Until that time, he was determined to create drama and glamour for himself even where none existed. So, when he wasn’t in the “in crowd” of social clubs in high school, he convinced his friends to create their own club. They even had a jacket designed with the name of the club__ the Trojans. Only he knew where they got that name or where they got the money to place it on the jackets.
When he didn’t have a fancy car to drive around his college campus, he painted “ Green Goose of Omega Psi Phi” on our father’s 1953 Dodge Truck; put purple and gold rug samples on the back and became a legend on campus. One of his friends laughed about an incident in which they were riding with him near the campus and the “Green Goose” gave out of gas. Not wanting to be seen in this potentially embarrassing situation they got off the truck and kept walking.. They had not gotten very far, before he rode pass them smiling and waving as he drove off. What they didn’t know was that he kept a half-filled gas container in the old truck for just that kind of occasion.
In retrospect, Hazes was a free spirit destined to follow the bright lights and career opportunities that New York offered. So, after graduating from college he left home in pursuit of those bright lights and career opportunities. Through the years he was always proud of his position with the New York Park and Recreation system and the difference they made in the lives of the people they served.
His passion, however, turned out to be for singing. Who knew? He never even led a song in the church choir. Later he would say that no one gave him a chance. Which was true. The lead singers of the youth choir were from families who sang. Since our family had no such distinction, his talents went unnoticed. New York, however, gave him his opportunity. When he gave our mother a copy of his group’s first tape, Gregory had to buy her a player right away. She played that tape over, and over, and over again. She was his proudest supporter. He started giving other family members copies of his music. We had to admit that his songs sounded good. He could always be counted on to add to the joy of our Family Reunions through his songs.
So today as we sit with sad hearts, we know that he would not want us to sadden his celebration. Instead he would want us to celebrate the life that he lived ___ a life filled with joy, excitement, mystery, service, love and most of all reverence to God. Like the rest of us, he was not perfect, but he was always striving to make up for that flaw. So today, Charlotte, Charlette, Sean, Lemmy and Derrick, cry when you must but be grateful, as Gregory and I are that we had him in our lives for as long as we did and for memories of the good times.
Today we find this excerpt from Maya Angelou’s poem “I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings” comforting.
The free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wings in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still, And his tune is heard on the distant hill, for the caged bird sings of freedom.
We know that our brother now sings the songs of the free bird.

Because of him, our vision is clearer, our senses heightened, our lives charmed and enchanted.
What more in the end or even in the beginning or in the middle could we ask of than that?
Nothing. Nothing more.
Imagine my utter amazement while eating lunch in a Manhattan restaurant one cold; sunny; wintry Saturday in the mid 1980s and spotting one I had not seen in over thirty years walking through the front door!
Although I was no more than 10-years-old when I last saw him, I knew it was Lemuel Haze Mial. He immediately understood I knew him well because calling each other by our full names’ of birth is a southern trait often done by those of us from Wake: Capital County of North Carolina.
It was an enchanted moment, indeed!
